Dart Buying Guide: Steel Tip vs. Soft Tip

The tip material dictates the type of board you need and the weight restrictions, which is crucial for competitive play.

   

• Steel Tip Darts: Designed for traditional **Bristle Dartboards**. Popular in competitive leagues (like the PDC). Weights typically range from **20g to 30g**.

   

• Soft Tip Darts: Used with **Electronic Dartboards**. Generally lighter due to board sensor limitations, typically ranging from **16g to 20g**.

Dart Components: Barrel, Shaft, and Flight

The right combination of these three parts can dramatically improve accuracy and grouping.

   

• Barrel Material: Choose **Tungsten** (90%+) for a slimmer barrel at a higher weight, allowing for tighter groupings. **Brass** is an affordable option for beginners.

   

• Flights: Affect stability and trajectory. Larger flights (standard) offer more lift; smaller flights (slim) are faster but less forgiving.
